Pjesnička djela III: Frankopan (drama) - Izabrane pjesme

Mirko Bogović

The third volume of Mirko Bogović's Poetic Works brings the historical drama Frankopan (in five acts) and a selection of his best poems. A classic of Croatian Romanticism and the Illyrian movement with patriotic and political themes.

The book was published in 1895 in Zagreb as the third volume of the collected Poetic Worksof Mirko Bogović (1816–1893). The introduction was written by the prominent literary historian Milivoj Šrepel.

The play Frankopan (written in 1851, first published in 1856) is the central part of the book. It is a historical tragedy in five acts that depicts the last days and fate of the Croatian nobleman Krsto Frankopan in the 16th century. Through the character of Frankopan and his contemporaries, Bogović deals with the themes of betrayal, the struggle for national rights, conflicts with the Habsburgs, and the tragic fate of the Croatian nobility. The play is full of romantic pathos, patriotic ideals, and political allusions to the era of absolutism under the Bach regime in which the author lived and worked. It is considered one of Bogović's most successful dramatic works, along with Matija Gubec and Stjepan, the last king of Bosnia.

The second part of the book consists of Selected Poems – a selection from Bogović's rich lyric poetry. Bogović was a prolific Illyrian poet who wrote patriotic, love and reflective poems. His poetry is characterized by simple, melodic language, patriotic enthusiasm and the influence of folk poetry. The selection includes the most famous poems from the period of the Illyrian movement (1840s), as well as later works.

Mirko Bogović (born in Varaždin) was an important figure of the Croatian national revival – a poet, playwright, politician, lawyer and participant in the Illyrian movement. He was imprisoned several times for his political activities. His works strongly reflect the romantic spirit of the 19th century: the awakening of national consciousness, the idealization of the Croatian past and resistance to foreign rule. Although less widely read today, Bogović was very influential and popular among the Croatian intelligentsia in his time.

This 1895 edition is part of the systematic collection of Bogović's works after his death and represents an important source for the study of Croatian literature of Romanticism and Illyrianism. The book is today an antiquarian rarity, sought after by lovers of older Croatian literature and historians.

The work combines dramatic power and lyrical beauty, offering insight into Bogović's vision of Croatian history and national identity. Ideal for those interested in Croatian literary heritage of the 19th century.

Since the play Three Sisters was written in the second half of the 19th century, it rightly carries with it certain motifs and an atmosphere that runs through most literary works of that period.
