Petar II. Petrović Njeguš: studija

Abdullatif Dizdarević

An interwar study of Petar II Petrović Njegoš on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his death: biography, selection of verses and interpretation of key works in a historical-political framework.

The book is a short study published in Zagreb in 1934, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the death of Peter II. Petrović Njegoš. In the Preface the author emphasizes the dispersion of sources and the reliance on existing literature (especially Rešetar; Chiodina Storia del Montenegro), with the intention of presenting Njegoš as a statesman, poet and philosopher, supplementing the presentation with excerpts from interviews with him.

The introductory part brings a pathetic dedication to Karađorđe and excerpts about Lovćen and Topola, which symbolically links Njegoš to the South Slavic pantheon. A brief biography follows: from his birth in Njeguši, education, election as bishop and state duties, to illness and death in 1851. In addition to biographical points, contemporary testimonies of travel writers and diplomats (e.g. Paton) are inserted, describing the bishop's appearance and authority.

The central chapters read Mountain Wreath and Harbour of Microcosm through the motifs of freedom, sacrifice, morality and ecclesiastical-patristic symbolism, with parallel notes on the connection with oral epic and the tribal world. The rhetoric is interwar, with frequent quotes and moral conclusions, and the purpose is synthetic: to bring the character and work closer to a wider audience in a compact format.

The final paragraphs highlight the reception of Njegoš among foreign scholars and the place of his cult in the Yugoslav context. As an antiquarian item, the edition bears witness to the periodical journalism of the 1930s, typography and be-kà printing production; it is suitable for collections dedicated to Njegoš, interwar essay writing and bibliography of Croatian publications on Montenegrin topics.
