Suvremeni žurnalizam i javno mišljenje (dva eseja)

Franjo Pavešić.

A collection of two essays dedicated to the role of journalism in shaping public opinion in the interwar period, published by Croatian journalist and publicist Franjo Pavešić.

The first essay analyzes contemporary journalism – its methods, style, responsibility and impact on society. Pavešić emphasizes that journalism is not only informing, but also forming opinions: he criticizes sensationalism, bias and commercialization, advocating objectivity, ethics and an educational role. The second essay deals with public opinion – how the media create, manipulate or reflect it, with an emphasis on the mass audience, propaganda and the responsibility of intellectuals in a democratic society.

The book is a pioneering work of Croatian media theory in the 1930s: Pavešić relies on European models (e.g. Lippmann, Habermas' predecessors), but applies them to the Croatian context – he criticizes political polarization, censorship and the influence of parties on the press. The essays are concise, well-argued and topical: they emphasize that journalism must be "free and responsible" for public opinion to be healthy and democratic.

Today rare and sought after in second-hand bookstores, the book is an important source for the history of Croatian journalism – it shows early attempts to theorize the media in a crisis-ridden society before World War II.
