Anđelika 2: Put u Versailles

Anđelika 2: Put u Versailles

Serge Golon, Anne Golon

The daughter of Baron de Sancé de Monteloup, brought up very freely, Angélique socializes with young people of her age, especially with Nicolas, her childhood friend, who does not leave her indifferent.

In order for her to finish her education, her father entrusted her to his cousin and neighbor Marquis de Plessis. Mocked by the latter's son, who calls her "a marquise in a sad dress", Angélique, while fleeing, accidentally enters the Prince of Condé's room and there surprises the poisoning plot being hatched against King Louis XIV. , his brother and Mazarin, whose Fouquet is one of the initiators.

Then he steals the poison (vitriol) and the list of conspirators, which he hides elsewhere. Angélique then publicly accused one of the conspirators present in the castle of conspiring against the king, the Prince of Condé, to remove him, which forced her father to send Angélique to a convent for 5 years. When we leave the cloister, we see that she has barely calmed down, but she has become more beautiful. On the way back, his father explains that he was already ruined before leaving; However, on the advice of a man named Count de Peyrac, he continued to exploit one of his abandoned lead mines that he thought he could do nothing about. To thank him for his providential advice, Sancé de Monteloup offered the count his daughter's hand in marriage, which represents a very favorable marriage since the suitor is very rich. When Angélique asks how old she is, her father simply replies "he's older than you"... After learning this, Angélique finds Nicolas, who confesses his love for her. Faced with the latter's refusal, he loses his temper and spits at her that her husband is a very ugly man, miserable and, moreover, reputed to be a witch.

On the day of the wedding, the castle is jubilant, but Angélique dreads meeting her husband. The man who steps out of the long-awaited carriage seems quite handsome, but he quickly introduces himself to Angélique as Bernard d'Andijos, a friend of Joffrey de Peyrac who has come to marry in his place, according to the law of marriage by proxy when the bride and groom do not live in the same town .

During the party, d'Andijos reveals to the young bride that her husband is not ugly, but very horrible and miserable. Desperate Angélique takes Nicolas to a nearby barn and offers to make her "first" a young and handsome man. However, when the time comes for action, she changes her mind when Guillaume, the coachman, surprises them. A fight ensues between the two men, during which Nicolas kills the old servant with his scythe. Angélique then orders him to run away, promising to meet him at dawn so she can escape to America with him.

Kreutzer's sonata belongs to those works of Tolstoy that the writer adapted in many ways to his view on moral issues, on marital morality above all.
