Sto pedeset godina od dolaska Jakova Ignjatovića u Dalj (1863.-2013.)

Đorđe Nešić

Proceedings of the international scientific conference held in 2013 in Dalj, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Serbian realist writer Jakov Ignjatović (1822–1889) in Dalj.

Ignjatović, known as the "Serbian Balzac", spent 16 years in Dalj (1863–1879) – the most fruitful period of his creative work. There he wrote key works: the novels "Eternal Bridegroom", "Strange World", "Thirty Years from the Life of Milan Narandžić", "Vasa Rešpekt", as well as short stories and feuilletons. Dalj became his "literary home" – a place where he drew motifs from the life of the Danube region, the peasant and bourgeois classes, social contrasts and folk customs.

The collection brings together works by literary historians, researchers and experts (e.g. Dušan Ivanić and others) on Ignjatović's life and work in Dalj: analyses of the novel, the influence of the environment on realism, language, social themes, connections with Vojvodina and Serbia. Topics on the cultural heritage of Dalj, Serbian literature in Slavonia and the significance of Ignjatović for regional and national culture are also included.

The book is an important contribution to the revitalization of the memory of Ignjatović in the Croatian Danube region – a documentary and scholarly monument to the writer who made Dalj a literary center of the 19th century. Edited by Đorđe Nešić, the Center's director, the book connects local heritage with current research.
