Mila 18

Mila 18

Leon Uris

Mila 18 is a novel about the legendary uprising in the Warsaw ghetto. To write the novel, Uris spent years studying archival materials, visiting the places where the events took place and talking to survivors of the ghetto...

As in many of Uris's other books, the story is mostly told from a journalist's point of view; in this case, an American-Italian journalist, Christopher de Monti, who was assigned to Warsaw after covering the Spanish Civil War. Although he was supposed to be an impartial and neutral observer, he meets and gets close to both the Nazi hierarchy and the Jews in Warsaw. He has a passionate affair with the wife of one of the leaders of the Jewish community, and he also deals with prostitutes provided by the Nazis. As the ghetto is surrounded and reduced to rubble, he joins the brave defenders. He is one of the few survivors and manages to escape with a young woman, Gabriela Rak, who is pregnant with the child of one of the defenders, Andrej Androfski, a former Polish army officer. The name "Mila 18" is taken from the bunker of the Jewish resistance headquarters under the building at Mila 18 Street.
