The Physical Education Manual in Secondary Schools is a practical manual for secondary school teachers and students. It contains methods, programs, exercises and instructions for organizing physical education classes in the SFRY.
Memoir of Physical Education in Secondary Schools is a joint work of three authors — Janka Leskošek (1916–1988, a famous sports pedagogue and professor at the DIF in Belgrade), Ljubomir Nešić and Žika Živanović — published in 1970 by the Belgrade Partizan. The book is intended for physical education teachers in secondary schools, but also for students as a practical reminder for teaching.
The work represents a typical textbook/manual from the period of socialist Yugoslavia, when physical education was an important part of general education with an emphasis on health, educational and recreational aspects. It contains an overview of curricula, teaching methodologies, descriptions of various exercises (gymnastics, athletics, games, team sports), instructions for assessing students' physical fitness, and advice for working with adolescents. Special attention is paid to the organization of classes with limited conditions (schoolyards, halls, equipment), injury prevention and the integration of hygiene and health habits.
The book is illustrated with photographs, sketches and exercise diagrams, which makes it clear and practical. It is written in Serbian, in a clear and professional style suitable for teachers.
In the context of the time, the textbook reflects the Yugoslav conception of physical culture at the time: a combination of physical development, collective spirit, preparation for work and defense, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Janko Leskošek, as the main author, was an influential figure in the field of theory and practice of physical education in Serbia and beyond.
Today, this copy is sought after among antiquarians and collectors of old school books, as a testimony of the education system in the other Yugoslavia. It is useful for researchers of the history of pedagogy, sports science and school programs of the 20th century. Although outdated in some technical details, it retains its value as a historical source on the approach to physical education in secondary education more than half a century ago.
