Tartarinova trilogija
The boastful Tartarin hunts lions, tackles the Alps and leads a colonial expedition. His dreams of glory repeatedly collide with fear, gullibility and the realities of adventure.
Alphonse Daudet’s Tartarin Trilogy follows a hero whose imagination is considerably braver than his temperament. In the Provençal town of Tarascon, Tartarin enjoys a reputation as a fearless hunter while remaining deeply attached to domestic comfort. The need to live up to his legend sends him into adventures beyond his abilities.
In the first novel, he travels to Algeria to hunt lions, armed with expectations borrowed from adventure stories. Deception, misunderstandings and comic setbacks follow. His next expedition takes him into the Swiss Alps, where the pursuit of mountaineering glory again exposes the distance between imagined heroism and actual danger.
In Port-Tarascon, the satire broadens as Tartarin leads his fellow townspeople on a colonial venture in the South Seas. Shared enthusiasm and credulity turn the promise of a fresh start into disillusionment.
Combining adventure, caricature and affectionate irony, Daudet examines provincial vanity, colonial fantasies and the desire for recognition. His contradictory hero remains both ridiculous and recognisable, revealing how individuals and communities invent flattering stories about themselves.
