Željko Malnar, Borna Bebek

Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek, as a kind of Croatian Corto Maltese and his friend Rasputin, travel through Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, India, Afghanistan, Tibet... The second edition of this cult book.

Two young souls, obsessed with the legends of a lost paradise – the Glass City from ancient tales – set off from Zagreb, crossing Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, and even Tibet and Nepal, in search of mystical secrets, parallel worlds and inner enlightenment.

The book is not just a guide through exotic places – the bazaars of Istanbul, the open seas of the Caspian Sea, the Himalayan mountains and Hindu temples – but an allegory of the spiritual quest. The Glass City symbolizes utopia: everyone has their own – personal, national, ideological or religious image of the perfect man and society. The authors dissect encounters with shamans, yogis, nomads and mystics, where anthropology, philosophy and adventure mix: from nightly stories by the fire in Afghan tents to hallucinogenic visions in Indian ashrams. Bebek's voice through the wind gives instructions to the Tibetan guides, while Malnar lies on a litter between the horses, mixing the cries of the tram with the cry of the wind - a symbol of the transition from everyday life to trance.

With humor, irony and deep introspection, they discover that the city of search is within us: a woman, self-knowledge, or the illusion of perfection that shatters when touched by reality. Years later, Bebek recalls: "As he lived, so he wanted to die - in search." This anthological prose, a blend of mysticism and reality, remains a testament to the freedom of the spirit in the era of the Cold War, reminding us that true paradise is the journey, not the destination.
