Jules Verne
Francuski romanopisac (Nantes, 8. II. 1828 – Amiens, 24. III. 1905), diplomirao pravo u Parizu. Od 1852. bio je tajnik kazališta Théâtre-Lyrique te je počeo pisati drame, novele i romane. Prvi veliki uspjeh postigao je pustolovnim romanom Pet tjedana u balonu (Cinque semaines en ballon, 1862), kojim je započeo niz od ukupno 62 romana pod zajedničkim naslovom Neobična putovanja (Voyages extraordinaires). Najpoznatiji su: Put u središte Zemlje (Voyage au centre de la Terre, 1864), Djeca kapetana Granta (Les Enfants du capitaine Grant, 1865), Put na Mjesec (De la Terre à la Lune, 1865), Dvadeset tisuća milja pod morem (Vingt mille lieues sous les mers, 1869), Put oko Mjeseca (Autour de la Lune, 1869), Plutajući grad (Une ville flottante, 1871), Put oko svijeta za osamdeset dana (Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours, 1872), Tajanstveni otok (L’Île mystérieuse, 1874), Carev glasnik (Michel Strogoff, 1875), Petnaestogodišnji kapetan (Un capitaine de quinze ans, 1878), Matijaš Sandorf (Mathias Sandorf, 1885), s radnjom u Istri, Dvorac u Karpatima (Le Château des Carpathes, 1892), Ledena sfinga (Le Sphinx des glaces, 1897). Odlikuje ih pustolovna fabula putovanja egzotičnim i neistraženim, katkad i fantastičkim, prostorima, koja su istodobno i simbolička moralna putovanja sazrijevanja i pročišćenja. Sadrže mnogobrojne geografske, historiografske i etnografske podatke, često i iscrpne opise znanstvenih dostignuća, izuma i hipoteza (podmornica, televizija, svemirska putovanja i dr.), a u njima je Verne potanko predstavljao i mnoge nove prirodnoznanstvene discipline. Te značajke čine mnoge od tih romana primjerima tzv. popularno-znanstv. romana, a neki od njih se zbog utkivanja futurističkih tehničkih izuma u fabulu smatraju i pretečama suvremene znanstvene fantastike; drugi, koji ne sadrže futurističke motive, primjeri su klasičnoga modusa pustolovne romanse. Najprevođeniji je francuski pisac.
