Priče iz davnine

Priče iz davnine

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić

"Tales from Long Ago" is Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić's most famous work, translated into about forty languages. With them, Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić gained worldwide fame, was nominated twice for the Andersen Award, and has since been called the Croatian Andersen.

This collection of eight fairy tales has created an original, authentic world inspired by Old Slavic mythology, folk tales and fantasy – a combination of the real and the unreal, the everyday and the miraculous, with deep moral messages about good, evil, greed, love, truth and harmony with nature.

The fairy tales feature characters such as the fairy Kosjenka, the giant Regoč, the fairy Nevičica, dragons, the fairies from the Stribor Forest, as well as ordinary people – Potjeh, the fisherman Palunko, Jaglenac and Rutvica, Lutonjica Toporko. Each story carries a universal lesson:

  • How Potjeh sought the truth – the search for wisdom and truth through life’s trials.
  • Stribor Forest – the danger of greed and disobedience.
  • Regoč – a love that transcends boundaries, spite and quarrels.
  • The fisherman Palunko and his wife – the consequences of selfishness and the desire for power.
  • Brother Jaglenac and Sister Rutvica – the power of brotherly love and sacrifice.
  • Sunce dever and Nevičica – the harmony of nature and the human heart.
  • Jagor and Lutonjica Toporko and nine župančića – courage, freedom and respect for nature.

The language is rich, rhythmic, archaic but accessible – full of folk expressions, proverbs and poetics. The fairy tales are written for children, but they also deeply touch adults with their philosophy and psychological depth.

This edition brings a fresh, modern look: beautiful, imaginative illustrations by Stjepan Lukić that bring the mythical world to life with colors, details and dynamic compositions – ideal for new generations of readers. The foreword by Vesna Krmpotić brings a poetic and profound review of Brlić-Mažuranić’s work, emphasizing her spiritual depth, Slavic spirit and the universal value of fairy tales.

The book is not only reading material, but also a gem of Croatian cultural heritage - translated into many languages (even Esperanto), nominated for the Nobel Prize. A perfect gift-edition for children and those who love fairy tales with soul.
