Vladimir Nazor

Stories from the Island, from the City and from the Mountain (1927) is a collection of autobiographical stories by Vladimir Nazor. Divided into three cycles, it brings back memories from childhood and youth – life on an island, schooling in the city and a

The work is a continuation of his Childhood Stories (1924) and is one of the most successful works of his autobiographical prose. The collection contains 14 short stories divided into three thematic units according to the setting:

  • From the Island – childhood memories on his native island (Brač or in the vicinity of Crikvenica), filled with the sea, nature, myths and childish curiosity.
  • From the City – stories about schooling, encounters with the new world, social rules and first disappointments.
  • From the Mountain – spending time in nature, mountain landscapes, encounters with shepherds and powerful experiences of the wilderness.

Nazor writes in a rich, picturesque and rhythmic language, full of lyrical passages. His stories are not only autobiographical memories, but also poetic prose in which reality and imagination, a child's perspective and mature reflection are intertwined. Particularly impressive are the descriptions of nature – the sea, islands and mountains – which become living participants in the story.

The collection exudes warmth, nostalgia and a deep sense of connection with the Croatian land and people. Critics immediately assessed it as the pinnacle of Nazor's prose lyricism upon its publication. Today it is considered a classic of Croatian autobiographical and lyrical prose of the 20th century and an important part of Nazor's oeuvre, along with his famous poems and stories for children.

This 1927 edition remains a sought-after antiquarian edition and one of Nazor's most beautiful works.
