Tisuću žarkih sunaca

Khaled Hosseini

A moving story of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, whose destinies intertwine in war-torn Kabul. A novel about love, suffering, motherhood, and the indestructible strength of women under Taliban terror.

A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) is the second novel by Khaled Hosseini, the author of the world-famous bestseller The Dragon Rider. The novel follows the lives of two women in Afghanistan over several decades. Mariam is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman, forced into an unhappy marriage with the much older Rasheed in Kabul. Laila is a young, beautiful and educated girl from the neighborhood, whose life changes dramatically after the death of her parents and the suffering of war. The two women, separated by a generation, are forced to share the same roof and the same husband, which initially causes tension, but later develops into a deep, life-saving sisterly bond.

Hosseini masterfully depicts Afghan history from Soviet occupation, through civil war, to the reign of terror of the Taliban. The book is brutally honest in its depiction of the suffering of women under the Taliban regime – the ban on education, public executions, domestic violence and complete lawlessness.

Despite all the horrors, the novel radiates the indestructible power of female solidarity, maternal love and hope. The style is emotional, but never pathetic. A Thousand Splendid Suns is considered one of the most powerful novels about the female experience of war and one of the most moving works of contemporary world literature.
