Six people are murdered in the "Night Bird" cafe. The investigation is started by the son of a police legend and a "stubbornly right guy" named Ed Exley. Jack Vincennes, a collaborator on the police TV series and a snitch for the tabloid magazine "Hush Hush", also gets involved, thinking that it is still not too late to stand on the "right side". There is also the recent partner of one of the dead, police officer Stens - the strong and impulsive Bud White.
