Freja sa sedam ostrva

Joseph Conrad

"Freya of the Seven Islands" is a novel by Joseph Conrad set in Southeast Asia, among the islands and trade routes of the colonial world. It was published at the beginning of the 20th century, and the editions from 1960 contain the same basic content.

The main character is Freja Nielsen, a beautiful and independent girl who lives with her father on a remote island. She is in love with the young sailor and merchant Jasper Allen, who often comes by ship between the islands. Their love seems strong and sincere, but it encounters serious obstacles. The biggest problem is the Dutch officer Heemskirk, a jealous and vindictive man who wants Freja for himself. After Freya rejects his advances, he uses his power and position to pursue Jasper. Through a tangle of intrigues, prohibitions and conflicts, Heemskirk manages to destroy Jasper's business and destroy the relationship between the lovers. Jasper becomes insecure and obsessed with fear, while Freja remains loyal and proud. Tragic circumstances and the pressures of the colonial government lead the story to a sad ending: Freja falls ill and dies, and Jasper is left broken by the loss.
