Grieben Reiseführer - Dalmatiën: Jugoslawische Adriaküste mit Inseln und Hinterland

The 1938 guidebook by the German publisher Grieben systematically describes Dalmatia with its islands and hinterland. It includes 18 maps, 24 illustrations and practical notes for drivers, offering a route by route through the coast.

This antiquarian tourist guide, the sixth edition of the Grieben series (Band 161), presents Dalmatia as a whole: coastal towns, islands and the interior. The book is written in clear, practical German, aimed at travelers arriving by car in the 1930s.

The introduction contains instructions on border crossings, traffic regulations and currency, followed by itineraries divided into shorter stages with estimated driving times. Each chapter combines brief historical notes, architectural and landscape highlights, recommended stops and advice on where to refuel or find accommodation.

Of particular value are 18 overview maps that accompany the text and make it easier to navigate in the era before modern road networks, and 24 illustrations that provide a visual insight into ports, fortresses and island panoramas. The emphasis is on larger centers such as Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik, but smaller towns and passages to the hinterland are not neglected either.

As a 1938 edition, the book offers an authentic cross-section of pre-war tourism on the Adriatic and is a valuable source for researchers of the history of travel, cartography and urban development of Dalmatia.
