Izgubljeni profil
The young and impulsive Josée escapes from her suffocating marriage to the jealous Julius, looking for freedom and a new beginning in Paris, where she rediscovers her own identity through new love and loneliness.
The novel Izgubljeni profil (Un profil perdu, 1974) is another successful work by Françoise Sagan, in which the author—with her signature elegance and melancholy—explores themes of loneliness, emotional dependency, and the quest for personal integrity. The plot follows Josée, an attractive and independent young woman trapped in a marriage to Julius, a wealthy and intensely possessive man whose jealousy gradually stifles her. A chance encounter with Croom, an older and influential American, gives her the strength to break free from this toxic relationship and return to Paris to rebuild her life. Croom offers discreet assistance and financial support, yet his generosity masks a desire for subtle control. When Josée meets Louis—a pleasant, laid-back man—she once again faces the challenge of forging genuine intimacy without sacrificing her freedom. Sagan masterfully depicts the characters' psychological states, the atmosphere of Parisian salons, and the quiet suffering hidden behind a façade of bourgeois luxury. The "lost profile" of the title symbolizes that part of one's personality lost through conforming to the expectations of others and making internal compromises.
