Zoran Živković, an excellent connoisseur of science fiction, made a selection of Clarke's best stories with the motif of first contact and wrote an extensive text in which he interprets them in detail.
The central part of the book is the essay "The motif of first contact in Arthur Clarke's SF works", divided into an introduction, four analytical chapters and a conclusion. The essay considers Clarke's use of anthropomorphism and philosophical dilemmas in otherworldly encounters, highlighting themes such as cosmic solitude, religion, evolution, and human arrogance. Živković highlights Clarke as a visionary who avoids clichés, focusing on the intellectual and ethical implications of contact.
The book also includes translations of four key Clarke stories that are analyzed: "Planet Three Report" (about a probe that discovers Earth as a dead world), "The Crusade" (religious fanaticism in the space age), "History Hour" (a fossil discovery that changes human history), and "Medusa Encounter" (the first contact with an alien being in Jupiter's atmosphere, where an astronaut becomes a cyborg and encounters a gaseous creature). These stories, translated into Serbian, illustrate the essay, making the book a bridge between theory and fiction.
