Leon Uris

American writer (Baltimore, August 3, 1924 – Shelter Island, New York, June 21, 2003), participated in II. World War II as a marine on the Pacific battlefield; after the war he worked as a journalist. In his first novels, he thematized the war experience (Battle Cry, 1953; The Angry Hills, 1955). His most famous novels are about recent historical events: about the events surrounding the founding of the State of Israel and after it (Exodus, 1958), about the Warsaw Ghetto and the anti-German uprising (Mila 18, 1960), about the Irish struggle for independence (Trinity, 1976 ) and other. He wrote scripts for several films (eg Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, 1957, directed by John Sturges).
