Mark Twain
Mark Twain (pravo ime Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835.–1910.) američki je pisac, humorist i satiričar, poznat po romanima Pustolovine Toma Sawyera (1876.) i Pustolovine Huckleberryja Finna (1884.), koji se smatraju klasicima američke književnosti. Rođen 30. studenog 1835. u Floridi, Missouri, odrastao je u Hannibalu, gradiću uz rijeku Mississippi, koji je inspirirao ambijent njegovih djela. Nakon očeve smrti 1847., Twain napušta školu i radi kao pomoćnik u tiskari, što ga uvodi u novinarstvo.
Godine 1857. postaje pilot na parobrodima Mississippija, a pseudonim „Mark Twain“ („oznaka dva hvata“) potječe iz riječne terminologije. Tijekom Građanskog rata kratko služi u konfederacijskoj miliciji, ali se posvećuje pisanju. Njegova prva uspješnica, pripovijetka The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (1865.), donosi mu slavu. Djela poput Nevini u inozemstvu (1869.) i Život na Mississippiju (1883.) miješaju putopis, humor i društvenu kritiku. Huckleberry Finn istražuje teme ropstva, morala i slobode kroz avanture dječaka i odbjeglog roba Jima. Twainov oštar humor i satira, poput one u Jenkiju na dvoru kralja Arthura (1889.), ismijavaju društvene norme.
Unatoč književnom uspjehu, suočavao se s financijskim problemima zbog loših ulaganja. Predavao je diljem svijeta i pisao do kraja života. Umro je 21. travnja 1910. u Reddingu, Connecticut.
