The book presents a selection of his diary entries, providing insight into key political events and figures of the 20th century. Sulzberger describes his meetings and conversations with prominent world leaders such as Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Acheson, Dulles, Kissinger, Hemingway and others. Through his reports, he brings the reader closer to the atmosphere of Cold War politics, decolonization, crises and conflicts that shaped the modern world.

The work is divided into 30 chapters, and the foreword was written by the French writer André Malraux, who calls Sulzberger "the last journalistic dinosaur".
