Kužiš stari moj & Stari dečki

Zvonimir Majdak

"Kužiš, oldi moj" is the most famous novel by author Zvonimir Majdak. His novel is included in the model of prose in jeans, which is defined by the relaxed and spontaneous language of young people, without definitions and rules and offering resistance to

The novel "Kužiš, stari moj" was written in Zagreb slang, semi-Kajkavian style and over time became the best example of urban folklore. Many critics came to the conclusion that it was Majdak who first wrote in his free language and thus introduced a kind of freedom into the language. The work was written in Zagreb jargon, so Majdak mixed the use of Štokavian language and the Kajkavian dialect. The work was published in 1970, and at that time, that's how Zagreb craftsmen talked.

With this work, Majdak conveyed to the readers the life and language of the Zagreb streets of that time, the harsh reality that the average Zagreb resident lived with. The novel was created at a time when Croatia was part of the system of the former Yugoslavia, and the Croatian language had no protection, moreover, it was suppressed, so even dialects could not be expressed. For this reason, this work is even more valuable because in a way it fights against that, even though we cannot classify it as Kajkavian literature.

The action of the novel takes place in Zagreb at the time of socialism.
