Since Laura and James Newman got married, they enjoy living together and going out with friends, as well as sometimes (too) relaxed sexual pleasures. After one of them, Laura discovers that she is pregnant and although they had not yet planned to have children, they realize that expanding their family is a new and exciting chapter in their lives. Well, people have been giving birth and raising children for centuries, how hard can it be? But Laura and Jamie face all the new excitements that pregnancy brings - terrifying midwives and pregnancy classes where you can hear the sounds of mating whales, right through to ultrasounds where they are thrilled by the sight of their unborn child.
