The Knight of the Slavonic Plain is a novel by Marija Jurić Zagorka, which takes place in Slavonia in the middle of the 18th century. The main locations of the action are today's Osijek, Retfala Castle, Valpovo and Našice, as well as the surrounding villa

"Knight of the Slavonic Plain", a novel about a mysterious hero in the fight against bandit gangs ravaging Slavonia, is also interesting because it is the only Zagorka novel that was not set in Zagreb. Zagorka allegedly had a lot of problems until she decided which historical events to use as the basis of her Slavonic novel because, as she noted, "Slavonia is not only fertile with natural fruits but also with rich material for novels." The novel, by the way, takes place in the era of Maria Theresa, and is based on real historical events.
