Aleja glagoljaša: Stoljeća hrvatske glagoljice

Josip Bratulić

The book Alley of Glagolitic: Centuries of Croatian Glagolitic Script by Josip Bratulić is a detailed overview of the monumental complex of Alley of Glagolitic Script, which stretches from Roč to Hum in Istria.

The Čakavian Assembly project, conceived in the 1970s with the idea of Zvana Črnja, was realized between 1977 and 1985 in collaboration with Bratulić, a philologist and literary historian, and sculptor Želimir Janeš. The alley consists of 11 stone monuments, with one copper one (the Hum Gate), that celebrate the Glagolitic script, the Slavic script, and the Croatian Glagolitic tradition.

The book describes each monument, from the Pillar of the Čakavian Assembly, symbolizing the letter “S”, to the Hum Gate with its Glagolitic inscriptions and calendar. Monuments such as the Table of Cyril and Methodius, the Seat of Clement of Ohrid, and the Lookout of Gregory of Nin celebrate key figures and events of Glagolitic culture. Bratulić emphasizes the continuity of the Glagolitic script since the 11th century, its role in preserving Croatian identity, and its connection with European culture. The book contains 96 appendices, 231 photographs and 24 poems by Croatian poets about the Glagolitic, making it a rich document.

Through an epic narrative, Bratulić portrays Glagolitic literacy as a symbol of humanism and spirituality, highlighting the contribution of Croatian Glagolitic priests. The work is crucial for understanding Croatian cultural heritage and the Glagolitic tradition in Istria.
