Karlo Štajner, prekaljeni austrijski i jugoslovenski komunista (rođen u Beču 1902.), stigao je u SSSR 1932. godine. U jesen 1936. godine, tokom velikih „čistki“, uhapšen je pod lažnim optužbama, a narednih dvadeset godina, potpuno nevin, živeo je u logorima i strahotama Sibira. Po povratku u Jugoslaviju, Štajner je opisao šta je doživeo u tih dvadeset strašnih godina...
