Ispovijesti engleskog uživatelja opijuma

Thomas de Quincey

The work, which intertwines biographical notes with a description of the effects of opium and reflections on the nature of dreams, imagination and memory, will not leave anyone indifferent.

The image of an addict haunted by horrifying images from his own subconscious, an artist who defends himself from harsh reality by changing his state of consciousness and at the same time explores the unknown paths of the human mind, has been popular for centuries. And one of the earliest, earlier than Baudelaire, Kerouac and the heroin chic of the nineties, was precisely Thomas de Quincey. In his confession, de Quincey leads us down a steep abyss and describes his own experiences, from the circumstances that led him to his first contact with then-legal laudanum, all the way to the hell of addiction that largely destroyed his life.
