Prodane djevojke

Hedwig Courths-Mahler

A classic sentimental romance novel with motifs of inheritance, intrigue, class differences and happy love that overcomes obstacles. The main character is the young Rose Rietberg, a beautiful and noble girl who is orphaned at an early age.

Rose's father leaves her a huge fortune, but until she comes of age, she is managed and cared for by her uncle Herbert Rietberg, a guardian and a man of dubious intentions. Uncle Herbert sees in his niece an opportunity for personal gain: he plans to "sell" her - to marry her to a rich but unloved man (perhaps an older nobleman or business partner) in order to take control of the property or get a share of the wealth.

Rose is honest, proud and emotional - she refuses such a marriage because her heart belongs to another. She meets a true lover: a young, noble man (often a baron or count with financial problems, but a noble heart), who loves her sincerely, not her wealth. A deep, pure love is born between them at first sight, but the obstacles are numerous: the uncle's intrigues, false accusations, social prejudices against the "orphan", secrets from the family's past, the envy of relatives and attempts at a forced marriage.

The novel follows Rose's suffering: humiliation, a sense of helplessness, but also her courage and loyalty to love. Uncle Herbert uses manipulation, lies and pressure to force her into marriage with a "buyer" - a man who is only interested in money. Rose runs away, hides or seeks allies, while her lover proves his sincerity by sacrificing himself and fighting for her.

Through a series of dramatic twists (revealing true intentions, forgiveness or death of the villains, unexpected help), the truth comes to light. The uncle is exposed, Rose gains full control of the property, and the lovers get married. The novel ends happily: love conquers greed, class barriers are broken down, and Rose finds happiness in marriage with a man who loves her for herself.

Franz Kafka

The second volume of Kafka's diaries covers the crucial years 1912–1914. This volume is a bridge between the early sketches and the mature novels, and the fragments are raw, aphoristic, full of self-mutilation, but also ingenious introspection.
