Hieronymus Bosch : život i djelo

Hieronymus Bosch : život i djelo

Trewin Copplestone

Hieronymus Bosch, Dutch painter and printmaker. With his works of unusual and imaginative iconography, he created a complex and extremely individual, realistic style; an inimitable and unique fantasist in all of Western European art.

The theme of Bosch's work is related to medieval folk superstitions about the atonement of mortal sins and Christian moralistics. With virtuosic, meticulous handwriting and richness of color, Bosch records imaginative and hallucinatory visions of hell, sin, temptations of saints, grotesque demons in a series of small scenes with masses of human and animal figures (mainly birds), and strange plant creations of various dimensions. In works with sacred themes or scenes from life, he is more restrained and measured in terms of composition. Influenced on painting by P. Bruegel st. to S. Dali and surrealist painters.
