“A Selection of Poems” by Dragutin Domjanić brings together the most important poems by one of the most recognizable Croatian lyricists and a key representative of modern Kajkavian literature. Domjanić’s poetic oeuvre combines the refined intimacy of European modernity with the warmth of the Kajkavian idiom, creating a verse that is simultaneously cultivated, musical and close to the people.

This collection includes his most famous poems, such as those that have become almost folk over time, as well as lesser-known lyrical writings that reveal the breadth of his sensibility. Thematically, the selection includes love and landscape poems, meditations on transience, elegiac tones dedicated to loved ones, and motifs that evoke the Zagorje landscape, childhood and gentle nostalgia for simpler times.

Domjanić’s rhythm remains soft and melodious, and the images are full of natural details – sun, flowers, scents, seasons – that serve as a backdrop for the inner states of the lyrical subject. In Štokavian poems, modern introspection and atmospheric sadness are more pronounced, while Kajkavian poems carry a special emotional intimacy and authenticity. Together, the poems reveal an author who combined the local and the universal, the sentimental and the artistically disciplined, leaving behind an oeuvre that still seems fresh, impressive, and sincere today.
