Vernik

Vernik

Dobrica Ćosić

"Vernik" is the third novel in the "Time of Evil" trilogy by the Serbian writer Dobrica Ćosić, published in 1990.

Through the character of Petar Bajević, Ćosić explores moral dilemmas and political upheavals during turbulent historical periods. Bajević, as the key protagonist, advocates the search for truth and the fight against evil, emphasizing that people often have the least imagination for good, while innovation is hidden in every evil.

The trilogy "The Time of Evil" provides a deep insight into the pivotal events of the mid-20th century, exploring historical events through the fates of its characters. The first part, "The Sinner", published in 1985, caused controversy and was assessed as an "anti-communist pamphlet". The sequels, "The Apostate" in 1986 and "The Believer" in 1990, continue the story of the Katić family and bring an open revision of official historiography.

Through "The Believer", Ćosić provides a critical look at ideological conflicts and their consequences for individuals and society, emphasizing the complexity of human nature and moral choices in times of evil.
