Hotel Marigold

Hotel Marigold

Deborah Moggach

"Hotel Marigold" (originally titled These Foolish Things) is a 2004 novel by British author Deborah Moggach, which was republished in 2013 under the title The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

It inspired the 2011 hit film of the same name. The plot follows a group of British retirees who, drawn by an advertisement for a luxury retirement home in India, decide to move to Jaipur. Among them are Evelyn, a widow looking for a new start; Graham, a former judge looking to come to terms with her past; and Muriel, a skeptical and withdrawn woman coming in for hip surgery. Upon arrival, they discover that the hotel is far from the luxury it promised, but through shared challenges, cultural differences, and new friendships, they find meaning, love, and a new perspective on life.

The novel is a warm and humorous story about second chances, embracing change, and the beauty of life in unfamiliar surroundings. Moggach skillfully portrays how old age doesn’t have to be the end, but the beginning of something new and exciting.
