Medicus

Medicus

Ruth Downie

Set in the 2nd century in the Roman province of Britain, the novel combines historical fiction, mystery and humor, following Russo's investigations of crimes in the harsh frontier world.

Russo, a divorced legionary doctor in Deva Victrix (now Chester), is struggling with financial debt and personal demons after serving in Africa. When he finds the body of a young slave in a river, he begins to investigate her death, even though it is not his duty. He soon meets Till, a British slave with healing skills, who becomes his ally and potential romantic partner. Their search uncovers a web of corruption, human trafficking, and murder within the military garrison, as Russo balances his medical duties with dangerous intrigue. Downie masterfully portrays Roman Britain, with detailed depictions of soldier life, cultural clashes between Romans and natives, and medical practices of the era. Russo, a pragmatic yet sympathetic protagonist, draws readers in with his wry humor and moral dilemmas. The novel has been praised for its authenticity, layered characters, and deft blend of history and mystery.
