Throughout the House of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski depicts the life of the Croatian nobility in the Croatian Zagorje region in its decline, interweaving poetic realism with sensitive lyrical descriptions of nature and country life. It consists of several short stories that depict the customs, fates, and social changes of the nobility, with an emphasis on transience and nostalgia. Key themes include the decline of the nobility, the emotional connection to home and nature, and the socio-political situation in Croatia at the end of the 19th century. Through detailed portraits of characters and settings, Gjalski creates an atmosphere of melancholy and critically portrays the society of his time.
