Aus dem Konflikt zwischen Freiheitsdrang und Todesdrang entsteht eine tiefe Frustration, die die Zigeuner „Schwarze Strafe“ nennen. Soledad Montoya analysiert und beschreibt das Gefühl der Zigeuner für die „Schwarze Strafe“ in ihrem Buch, und wir können ihr Leiden in den folgenden Versen nachempfinden: Zigeunerballaden sind zwar dafür bekannt, ein wenig behandeltes Thema wie die Welt der Zigeuner anzusprechen, doch dies ist nicht das einzige Thema des Autors Federico García Lorca. Tatsächlich finden wir in den 18 Romanzen des Romancero verschiedene Themen, die uns vertraut sein sollten. Das wichtigste ist natürlich die Unterdrückung, der Missbrauch und das Leben der Zigeuner, eines Volkes, das schon immer am Rande der Gesellschaft stand, unterdrückt und für seinen Lebensstil mit schlechten oder negativen Adjektiven versehen wurde.
