Slobodna: Odrastanje na kraju povijesti

Slobodna: Odrastanje na kraju povijesti

Lea Ypi

"Free" is a memoir about growing up amidst political turmoil, about a family whose history is intertwined with the history of the country, and also an insightful reflection on the limits of progress and the burden of the past.

Albania in 1989, an isolated and forgotten country that is difficult to enter and even more difficult to leave, a country where political executions are an invisible part of everyday life, and standing in lines for food is a form of sociability. For ten-year-old Lea Ypi, this country is home: a place of security, togetherness, hope and freedom. When the communist regime is overthrown in Albania in December 1990, Lea Ypi discovers many truths about her family and the country's history, and freedom takes on new meanings. But hopes will quickly dissipate: unscrupulous profiteers destroy the economy and prospects for a better future crumble in unemployment and mass exodus...
