Oslovljavanje davnih riječi

Ivan Šarčević

The book is a collection of columns that Ivan Šarčević, a Bosnian Franciscan, theologian, professor of pastoral theology and catechesis, wrote over the past five years for the Vjesnik of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Luke, Jajce.

The texts that the reader is introduced to here are not at all harmless. They are written in the form of meditation, which can lead one to think that this is an easy, non-binding, floating read, which touches the shores of everything and everyone, and yet it does not concern anyone in the true sense of the word. However, as we go through these texts, we will hardly be able to plunge into the formless abyss of what simply exists. From the first text about the bloody brotherly relationship of Cain and Abel and from the disturbing question about the source, or better yet, the secret of evil, to the last text about the noble relationship of friendship between people from different worlds of this world, they constantly speak of man's essential determinant: that being is a relationship. And in doing so, this essentiality of ours is not painted only in beautiful and embellishing colors, even if the ultimate interest is precisely that which is beautiful and good. Living authentic human relationships is not easy. Not because of the circumstances of life itself, but because of our willingness to refine our profile and our place with various techniques: from intellectual arrogance and dishonesty to emotional entrapment, from hidden wills for power to open pretensions to the Secret, from overly flattering separation to stubborn revenge. All of this depicts demanding relationships between brothers and sisters, between disciples, between followers, relationships towards the Master, towards our fellow human beings, towards God.
