Achieving likeness in portraiture requires good coordination of eye and hand movements. Professional portraitist Douglas Graves developed this basic premise into a functional technique. He describes portraiture as a sequence of related processes: observing the basic outlines, noting deviations of the basic elements from the ideal symmetrical form, considering the human anatomy that lies beneath them, interpreting the model's personality, and transferring all of this by appropriate means into a tonal drawing.
