Tehnika i znanost kao ideologija
From technology and science to the reconstruction of historical materialism
Jürgen Habermas's book "Technique and Science as Ideology" (1968; published 1986) is a collection of essays in which the author critically analyzes the role of science and technology in modern society. Habermas starts from the thesis that in modern industrial societies, science and technology are no longer just neutral tools for progress, but are becoming a means of legitimizing political and social power. Instead of an open ideology, power is increasingly justified by "technical necessity" and expert knowledge, which narrows the space for democratic debate. Habermas also considers how scientific and technical progress can mask social conflicts, because political issues are presented as technical or expert, rather than as questions of value and choice. The book warns that uncritical reliance on science and technology can lead to a decline in democracy. Habermas advocates the restoration of communicative rationality and the strengthening of public debate as the foundation of a free and just society.
