Anton Aškerc

Selected Poems by Anton Aškerec bring a representative selection of lyrical, epic and ballad works by one of the most prominent Slovenian poets of realism and national revival.

Selected Poems of Anton Aškerec, edited by philosopher and literary historian Albert Bazala, were published in 1913 in Zagreb as part of the Matica Hrvatska library. This edition brought the Croatian public closer to the work of one of the most significant Slovenian poets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose work played an important role in the development of modern Slovenian literature.

The selection includes poems that best represent Aškerec's poetic oeuvre, known for its blend of realism, romanticism and strong interest in historical, social and moral themes. Historical narrative poems, ballads and romances inspired by the Slavic past, folk tales and the lives of ordinary people occupy a prominent place in his poetry. The author often addresses issues of freedom, social justice, national identity and human destiny, trying to connect literature with contemporary social challenges.

Editor Albert Bazala provided the edition with a preface and notes that provide the reader with basic information about the poet's life, literary development and place in Slovenian culture. The book was created during a period of intense cultural ties between Croatian and Slovenian circles and bears witness to efforts to bring South Slavic literatures closer together.
