Tri noći Don Juanove: Roman iz života jednog opernog pjevača

Lajos Biró

Three Nights of Don Juan (1917) is a novel based on the life of a famous opera singer. The story follows three fateful nights in which the protagonist, a modern-day Don Juan, experiences profound emotional and existential crises.

The story unfolds over three nights in the life of a distinguished and charismatic opera tenor, who embodies the modern version of Don Juan. On each of these nights, he meets different women and confronts his inner demons – boredom, emptiness, the transience of fame, an artistic crisis and the impossibility of true love. The novel explores themes of decadence, the artistic soul, eros and melancholy typical of European literature before the First World War.

Biro masterfully portrays a psychological portrait of a character who is both a seducer and a victim of his own legend. The novel combines elements of social satire, psychological prose and fin-de-siècle mood. The style is elegant, dynamic and full of the atmosphere of opera sets, the theatre world and the nightlife of European metropolises.

This 1918 edition is a relative rarity on the antiquarian market today. The book was published by the Entertainment Library edition and was popular among readers who liked lighter, but stylistically refined fiction with psychological depth.

Lajos Biró was a prolific Hungarian writer, playwright, and screenwriter (he later worked in Hollywood), and this novel represents one of his more successful works of fiction before moving on to screenwriting.
