Claude Farrère

An exciting adventure novel by Claude Farrère set in exotic Turkey, full of intrigue, secrets and political conspiracies under the cover of night. Classic French exotic prose with a tense plot and rich atmosphere.

Claude Farrère in his novel Under the Cloak of Night takes the reader to the exotic world of pre-revolutionary Turkey, more precisely to Constantinople (Istanbul) at the very end of the Ottoman Empire. The work is full of tension, secrets and political intrigues that take place in the night hours, in the shadows of courts, harems and diplomatic circles. The main character, a French diplomat, is involved in a dangerous game of power, love and betrayal, which creates a rich and exotic atmosphere characteristic of Farrère's style.

The novel is written with typical French charm and elegance, combining adventure, psychological depth and picturesque descriptions of the Orient. Farrère, who himself served in the French navy and knew the Middle East well, successfully evokes the scents, colours and mystery of that world that was then slowly disappearing.

In its time, the novel was widely read and sought after among lovers of adventure prose. Today it is considered a sought-after antiquarian book with cultural and historical value as a representative of French exotic literature in Croatian translations from the interwar period.
