Humor i satira

Radoje Domanović

"Humor i Satira" by Radoje Domanović (1935) is a selection of the most famous satirical stories by the Serbian master of satire. A critique of society, politics and mentality through a witty and sharp style.

Humor i satira is a collection of short stories by the great Serbian satirist Radoje Domanović (1873–1908). Domanović is the most important Serbian satirist from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection brings together some of his most successful satirical stories, including classics such as Pozorište u palanci, Danga, Vođa, Naša posla, Mrtvo more and Sima penzioner, as well as his speech Sećanje na Milovan Đ. Glišić. The foreword was written by Branimir Miljković.

Through grotesque, ironic and humorous situations, the writer mercilessly mocks Balkan mentality, political circumstances, corruption, bureaucracy, false patriotism and the social flaws of his time. The style is sharp, witty and precise – Domanović's satire often turns into bitter irony and caricatured realism. Although he wrote before the First World War, his criticism remained relevant in the interwar period, which explains the reissues in the 1930s.

The 1935 edition of Luča belongs to a popular library intended for a wider audience and intellectuals. Today, this booklet is a sought-after antique rarity. The collection represents an excellent introduction to Domanović's oeuvre and one of the most widely read selections of his satires in interwar Yugoslavia.
