Čudnovate zgode maloga crnca Đeka

Ratko S. Scipioni

An adventure children's novel follows little Đek on a series of exciting journeys and encounters, through which he overcomes obstacles and learns about the world through courage, ingenuity, and kindness. With illustrations by Andrija Maurović.

The Strange Adventures of Little Black Đek by Ratko S. Scipioni is one of the more interesting, today rare titles of Croatian children's literature from the first half of the 20th century. First published in 1941, and then reprinted in 1943, the novel belongs to the tradition of adventure literature for young readers and reflects the then popular model of educational and entertaining children's prose.

The main character, the boy Đek, goes through a series of unusual adventures, meets different people and faces dangers that require courage, resourcefulness and moral steadfastness. The work is structured as a series of episodes that lead the hero through new experiences and trials, with adventurous elements interwoven with emphasized ethical messages about friendship, honesty and perseverance.

Literary historians have noted that the novel partly continues on the tradition established by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić with her novel The Strange Adventures of the Apprentice Hlapić. The title itself suggests this connection, and certain motifs and the structure of the adventurous journey demonstrate a conscious dialogue with one of the classics of Croatian children's literature.

The special bibliographic value of the edition is given by the illustrations by the famous Croatian comic artist and illustrator Andrija Maurović, which contributed to the book's recognition among generations of young readers. Today, it is a rare antiquarian edition of interest to collectors of children's literature, researchers of Croatian cultural history, and fans of Maurović's artistic oeuvre.
