Emily Bronte

Emily Brontë’s Gothic novel about the dark, obsessive love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, whose destructive power, revenge, and social barriers ruin two generations of families.

The novel Wuthering Heights by the English author Emily Brontë—published in local translations in 1976 (by houses such as "Mladost" or "Grafički zavod Hrvatske")—stands as one of the most powerful and distinctive works of world literature. Set against the rugged, windswept Yorkshire moors, the novel tells the story of the wild, passionate, and destructive love between the orphan Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. Their bond, forged during childhood at the Wuthering Heights estate, faces insurmountable obstacles when Catherine decides to marry the wealthy and composed Edgar Linton from the neighboring estate, Thrushcross Grange. Catherine’s decision triggers an unprecedented wave of vengeance: stung by betrayal and humiliation, Heathcliff dedicates his life to destroying both families—the Earnshaws and the Lintons—extending his wrath even to the next generation of their children. Through a complex narrative structure conveyed by the tenant Lockwood and the housekeeper Nelly Dean, the novel explores themes of obsession, revenge, class distinctions, isolation, and the supernatural. Unlike the typical Victorian novels of its era, Wuthering Heights rejects conventional morality, offering instead a raw, Gothic atmosphere and an untamable force of human passion that transcends life and death.
