Effi Briest

Effi Briest

Theodor Fontane

Theodor Fontane's classic about young Effie married to an older baron. A brief extramarital affair is exposed years later, leading to social rejection, a duel, and her tragic fate.

"Effi Briest" is considered one of the most important socio-critical novels of German realism. The plot follows seventeen-year-old Effi, a playful and unrestrained girl who, at the encouragement of her parents, marries the much older Baron Geert von Innstetten, a respected and strictly formal civil servant. Married life in the gloomy seaside town of Kessin quickly becomes unbearably monotonous and lonely for young Effa.

In a moment of emotional emptiness, Effi enters into a brief and reckless love affair with the charming bohemian, Major Crampas. When the family moves to Berlin, the past seems to be forgotten. However, six years later, Innstetten accidentally finds old love letters. Guided by the rigid social code of honor and the norms of Prussian society, he challenges Crampas to a duel in which he kills him, divorces Effi and takes away her daughter. Rejected by society and her own family, with impaired health and a broken spirit, Effi eventually returns to the family estate where she dies at a young age.

Theodor Fontane criticizes social hypocrisy, social conventions and the cruelty of the Prussian patriarchal system with exceptional psychological subtlety and masterful irony. The novel shows the disparity between human emotions and social rules in a poignant way.
