Kapetanova kći

The Captain's Daughter (1836) is a historical novel and one of the most important prose works by the great Russian writer Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The story is set in the second half of the 18th century, during a peasant uprising led by Emelyan Pugachev, who falsely presented himself as Tsar Peter III. The story follows the young nobleman Pyotr Grinev, who is sent by his father to serve in the remote fortress of Belogorsk, where he falls in love with Maria Ivanovna, the daughter of the fortress's commander.

Their peaceful life is interrupted by the insurgents' invasion and the fall of the fortress. Grinev escapes execution thanks to a noble gesture from the past — he once gave his rabbit fur coat to an unknown wanderer, who turns out to be Pugachev. Through the storm of the civil war, Grinev remains faithful to his officer's oath and love for Maria, while facing his treacherous rival Shvabrin, who goes over to the side of the rebels.

Written in the form of a family chronicle and memoir, The Captain's Daughter masterfully combines a personal love drama with great historical turmoil. Pushkin's simple and elegant style explores themes of honor, loyalty, mercy, and humanity in times of ideological madness and violence.
