Eko eko
A science-fiction story about a boy named Hrvoje and his friends who help a small alien named Eko clean up the trash on his planet and rescue a captured girl named Vesna.
"Eko Eko" is a popular science fiction novel for children by the Croatian author Hrvoje Hitrec. The story begins in an oak forest near Hrvačići, where a group of children—a boy named Hrvoje, twins Toki and Voki, and their sister Vesna—discover an unusual, miniature spaceship. A small alien named Eko, a being from the planet Bon, emerges from it. Eko comes from a planet that is heavily polluted because it has been occupied by the evil "Smetari" (Scavengers) and their monster, Dron, who have turned it into a garbage dump. The plot thickens when the Scavengers kidnap Vesna and take her to their planet. Hrvoje and his friends do not hesitate: they board the "Ekosfera" and embark on a space adventure to rescue Vesna and help Eko in the fight for a clean and healthy environment. In the novel, Hitrec skillfully blends elements of fantasy, humor, and suspenseful adventure with a vitally important environmental message. Through the child characters, values such as friendship, courage, unity, and empathy are highlighted, while the struggle against the Scavengers symbolizes the need to preserve nature and act responsibly toward the environment. Thanks to its dynamic pace and accessible style, "Eko Eko" has remained one of the most beloved required reading titles for generations.
