Despite this, Florentino resolves to remain devoted to her in his heart, waiting for the moment when they might be together again. His wait lasts exactly 53 years, 7 months, and 11 days—until the death of her husband. Throughout this time, both characters pass through various stages of life, marriage, aging, and physical change. Employing his signature style of magical realism, Márquez equates the symptoms of passionate love with those of cholera, exploring how emotions affect the human spirit and body.
