Ljubav u doba kolere
A masterpiece about the tireless love of Florentino Ariza, who waits more than half a century for his youthful love Fermina Daza, portraying devotion, aging, and passion in the face of all social obstacles.
"Love in the Time of Cholera" (1985) is a celebrated novel by the Colombian Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez, and the 1999 edition presents this classic in Croatian translation. Set on the Caribbean coast during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the story follows the unusual and enduring romance between Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. After a youthful romance, Fermina's father puts an end to their relationship, and she marries the distinguished physician Juvenal Urbino. Despite this, Florentino resolves to remain devoted to her in his heart, waiting for the moment when they might be together again. His wait lasts exactly 53 years, 7 months, and 11 days—until the death of her husband. Throughout this time, both characters pass through various stages of life, marriage, aging, and physical change. Employing his signature style of magical realism, Márquez equates the symptoms of passionate love with those of cholera, exploring how emotions affect the human spirit and body. The story is a moving, multi-layered study of marriage, loyalty, the passage of time, and old age, remaining one of world literature's most beautiful and influential works on undying love.
